This evening we went for a walk around our neighbourhood. Amongst the derelict, gratified buildings and grimy roads and footpaths were many ‘dope’ – as Eugene likes to say – cafes and restaurants.Before going to the one that our Air BnB host recommended for dinner we bought some things for breakfast at the ‘mymarkt’ supermarket. My soya milk cost 2.74 Euros, orange juice and cereal were also in the mid 2 Euro price bracket. If people (eg our taxi driver) are earning 2.80 Euro per hour there must be other, cheaper supermarkets around…
The restaurant had a super cute atmosphere, with cotton wool buds glued to the windows and a sleigh hanging from the high sandstone ceiling. We had a great time talking and my chickpeas and spinach were really yummy.
I’m looking forward to meeting the other volunteers tomorrow and getting started. Apart from the group leaders, Eugene and Franz are the only guys from a group of about 20 volunteers.
